October 24, 2001 – Elevation NYC1

This Day in U2 History

October 24, 2001 was the first of three Elevation shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City, and Tasha and I had tickets to all three shows. We arrived in NYC 5:15am the morning of the first show. We were numbers 39 and 40 in the GA line. I remember being VERY excited to see Macy’s just a block away – maybe it was because it was coming up on the Christmas season and one of my favorite Christmas movies is Miracle on 34th Street. Around 9m, we saw Sammy (Larry’s drum tech) and Dallas (Edge’s guitar tech) walk in.

After a stressful GA line procedure, we managed to get great spots up front at the rail between Bono and Adam. Garbage opened. The show had the same set list as the Baltimore show a few days earlier, except U2 played “Bad” instead of “Please.” I had a great Larry moment! During “Kite,” when the spotlight shone on Larry, I screamed, clapped, jumped and down. Larry looked at me, nodded and smiled. Yeah sadly that all it takes for me. Our friend Dan got pulled up on stage during “Stuck in a Moment.” Our friend Ruth got pulled up on stage and played guitar and sang “Knockin on Heaven’s Door” with U2. All the policemen and firemen who died on 9/11 were listed on the screens during “One.”

Elevation NYC1 10.24.01 Set List: Elevation, Beautiful Day, Until the End of the World, New Year’s Day, Out of Control, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Stuck In a Moment, Kite, Angel of Harlem (full band – electric), Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door (full band), Staring at the Sun (B&E – acoustic), Bad / 40, Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Pride, Bullet the Blue Sky, What’s Going On, New York, One, Peace On Earth / Walk On.
