I chose the Elevation concert in Philadelphia on June 11, 2001 at the First Union Center as my favorite ‘F‘ U2 show because it was a significant, if not a watershed, show. It was this Elevation show that started the whole “Larry Mullen Band” craze and joined four U2 fan together as friends.
It was at this Elevation show in Philly 13 years ago that a “Larry Mullen Band” shirt was thrown onto the stage. Larry put the shirt on his drum kit and it remained there for the rest of the show. I of course took pictures of “The Larry Mullen Band” shirt hanging off Larry’s drums and posted it on some U2 website. A girl named Jenny saw these pictures and commented that her friend Paola was the one who threw the shirt on stage. That show was Paola’s birthday and being a huge Larry fan, she made the shirt for him. We all became fast friends, along with my friend Tasha whom I had met a month before at the Pittsburgh show. Paola made us each a “Larry Mullen Band” shirt. This is what I wrote about that Elevation show in Philly:
I woke up at 5:30 am Monday morning June 11th, drove to Philadelphia, and was in the GA line at First Union Center by 8:10 am. It was a long, hot day in the sun. I made some new friends in the GA line. Inside the arena, I stood up front at the rail just to the right of Adam. U2 played a bit of “Night and Day” after “Beautiful Day.” Other than that, it was the standard set list with the addition of “In a Little While.” A “Larry Mullen Band” shirt was thrown on stage, and Larry put it on his drum kit and it remained there for the rest of the show.
