Best and Worst U2 Album Covers

THE JOSHUA TREE

Someone suggested I rank U2’s album covers, which seems less controversial than eras and band members, so that is what I am going to do today. I’ll save eras and band members for next week because it has been a long week, and I don’t think I have enough fight left in me.

Here is how I rank U2’s album covers:

I didn’t know if I could be objective with this. Meaning I thought I was going to list my favorite U2 album covers in the same order as my favorite U2 albums. That was sort of the case with my favorite album cover The Joshua Tree, but it is an iconic photo. To me it symbolizes everything U2 was and is. I ranked Pop second because I love the photos of all four, the colors remind me of “Gone” (lighting from Popmart) and of the Pop rubix cube I have from 1997. October is third because it captures U2’s look and crazy hairstyles in 1982- they were always so serious. Achtung Baby is fourth mainly because I have been looking for that U2 ring since 1991. I love the collage of pictures – reminds me of the ZooTv tour and everything about that era. I thought Rattle and Hum would rank higher because of my love for it and JT, but it is 5th. It would have ranked higher if Larry was on the cover. I like it because that photo reminds me of the movie. Oddly enough How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb ranked 6th. It got a high ranking because it features all four band members. Also surprising to me is how low All That You Can’t Leave Behind ranked, 7th. It does feature all four band members, but far way and a little fuzzy. And Larry is just peaking out behind Bono. (Maybe that’s symbolism for Larry always being behind Bono on stage.) The Unforgettable Fire is 8th. It is a pretty picture, but that’s about it for me. Zooropa is ok at 9th. I like the ‘Achtung Baby’ – I have it on my car. The last three I really don’t like. Peter, the boy on War (10th) and Boy (11th), always kind of creeped me out. No Line on the Horizon is a terrible album cover, definitely my least favorite. I mean I get it, but it’s boring to look at. Now the back of the album is beautiful – they should have used that.
