I love blogging the A to Z Blog Challenge - blogging everyday in April, except Sundays, on a specific theme. I loved doing it last year, and I enjoyed it even more this year. I think I enjoy the challenge so much because I am one who likes to to lists things, rank my favorites. This year’s theme, in case you missed it was ‘My U2 from A to Z’ – about what aspects of U2 that has influenced me. I also blogged the A to Z Challenge on my other blog Deena’s Days about ‘My Music’ – music I love from A to Z. I am not sure what I am going to write about U2 now since the new album and tour won’t be for several months, so if you have any suggestions please let me know.

ZooTv – my U2 A to Z

Posted in A to Z April Challenge, Tours, U2, ZooTv with tags , , on April 30, 2013 by DeenasDays

The ZooTv Tour was my first U2 tour. U2 announced they would be touring America in the Spring of 1992, in support of their Achtung Baby album. I was a sophomore in college, so I could now go to concerts! I had a subscription toPropaganda, U2’s fan magazine, which gave me an opportunity to buy tickets to one or two concerts before they went on sale. But me being me, I wasn’t satisfiedto go to just one or two shows. No, I had to go to as many as I could, and for the ZooTv tour I went to eight shows. The months between the release of Achtung Baby and the ZooTv Tour were spent constantly watching and listening to U2. My U2 buddy Mike and I would spend hours and hours just watching U2 footage over and over that we had taped on VHS – MTV specials, interviews, videos, etc. It was during this time that I went from a U2 fan to, dare I say, U2 fanatic. 1992 was going to be a great year!

At the age of 19 ½, I saw my first U2 show. It was on the ZooTV tour on March 7, 1992 at Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia. It was the 5th show of the tour. My best friend, Cindy, went with me. We made the four-hour drive from Baltimore to Hampton and immediately walked over to the arena. We saw Bono standing in the middle of a bunch of fans and reporters. I didn’t speak with him, but got close enough to hear what he was saying to everyone else. For my first show, I was 4th row. Bruce Hornsby and Phil Joanou were also in attendance. The Pixies opened, and I did not like them at all. But then again, I just wanted to hear U2. I had waited 5 long years to see them!

My second U2 show was 3 days later on in March 10, 1992 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, just under a two-hour drive from Baltimore. For this show, I was 9th row. I again saw Bono entering the arena and speaking with fans. I hid in the bathroom when the Pixies played.

I don’t remember the actual concerts, as far as the songs that were played, from this first leg of the ZooTv tour and I didn’t keep a journal back then, so I am relying on u2 fan sites for setlists. The setlists were pretty much the same for both ZooTv shows I attended on the first leg: Zoo Station, Even Better Than the Real Thing, Mysterious Ways, The Fly, One, Until the End of the World, Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World, Angel of Harlem, Satellite of Love, Bad, All I Want is You, Bullet the Blue Sky, Running to Stand Still, Where the Streets Have No Name, Pride, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Desire, Ultraviolet, With or Without You, Love is Blindness. The only difference was Love is Blindness was not played in Hampton and The Fly was played second in Philadelphia.

ZooTV tour program

In the summer of 1992, U2 ditched the arenas for stadiums for their ZooTv Outside Broadcast Tour, and I went to the first five shows and another one a month later. Living in Maryland made it easy to travel to most of the East Coast shows. Washington DC, Philadelphia, and New York were all within a 3 hours drive. Plus U2 usually played two nights in each city. It was on this leg of the tour that I started meeting U2 fans and touring around with them. Mike and I traveled to all these ZooTv shows together and met the same folks along the way. Unfortunately, we did not keep in contact with our new friends after the tour ended. Mike and I found out U2 was going to be rehearsing for their tour in nearby Hershey, Pennsylvania. They wanted to rehearse at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, but the community freaked out and protested. So we went up to Hershey a couple of nights and sat outside to listen to the rehearsals, but we never saw the band. We did hear them play Acrobat andSo Cruel though. We got tickets to the rehearsal show on August 7, 1992 at Hershey Park Stadium. Tickets were only $15 and went to local charities. We were way in the back, but at least we were there and it was a great show. Instead of starting off the show with Zoo Station like all the other shows, U2 began with Sunday Bloody SundayNew Year’s Day, and Pride before going into their regular set list starting with Zoo StationPride was played again before the encore. This was the first time I had heard New Year’s Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday, since they didn’t play them on the first leg. Edge sang Van Dieman’s Land, the first and only time I have heard it live. This show was the day before Edge’s birthday, so Bono led the audience in singing Happy Birthday.

On August 11, 1992 three friends and I drove up to New Jersey for the official opening of the ZooTv Outside Broadcast tour at Giants Stadium. Opening night had been pushed back one night to August 12th. Mike and I went over to the stadium anyway and ended up sneaking in and getting up on the stage and touching the trabants, which were used to light the stage. We eventually got kicked out of the stadium. We tried to figure out where U2 was staying. Even though it was August, it was cold at night, so while waiting on the curb for U2 to show up at the hotel, we huddled next to a bus keeping warm from the fumes. There were a bunch of fans standing outside Giants Stadium on the afternoon of August 12th waiting for U2 to arrive. Bono came out and went down the line talking with each of us, signing autographs and taking pictures. When Bono came to me, he noticed the tee shirt I had made with ‘One’ on it.

I handed Bono my Outside It’s America book for him to autograph. I noticed he was taking a while, so I looked at what he was doing and saw he was misspelling my name. I said, “No, Deena is spelled with two e’s.” Bono kind of gave me this sly smile. In my book, he wrote, “A nice t-shirt Din…Deena Bono 92”

Then I threw my camera to Mike, so he could take a picture of me and Bono, both with our big sunglasses. Bono’s head is on my shoulder. It’s a great picture! He autographed it a few days later in DC.

And if that wasn’t enough, Larry drove by us on his motorcycle and waved. He didn’t stop unfortunately, but I did get a picture. Then I ran away screaming – he just has that affect on me. I wouldn’t meet Larry for another 9 years.

Our seats for opening night on August 12, 1992 were in the second section on the floor in the fifth row. Larry sang Dirty Old Town as only he can! I was so excited that Jonathan tried to hold me back, so I hit him causing him to fall off his chair. Lou Reed joined U2 on the b stage for Satellite of Love, and his performance was used for the rest of the tour via video.

The next night on August 13th, we were in the front floor section in the 8th row. I remember running past security to get to the B Stage as Bono was walking down. I got a Zoo Dollar that night as they flew through the air during Desire.

Two days after Jersey on August 15th, Mike and I were back in our hometown for two more ZooTv shows. Well, sort of. As close as the ZooTv tour was going to get to Ellicott City, Maryland. We were at RFK Stadium in Washington DC in the rain. I met Bono again and he autographed the picture of the two of us from Giants Stadium. He wasn’t as talkative as in Jersey. I think the rain made him grumpy.

U2 ended both shows on August 15 & 16, 1992 with Can’t Help Falling In Love in honor of the 15th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley on August 16, 1977. For the first show, I was third row and Bono knelt in front of us and sang it. As an avid Elvis fan as well, this was an amazing, unforgettable moment for me! My worlds were colliding! For the rest of the tour, U2 ended their shows with Can’t Help Falling in Love.

My final ZooTv show was on September 3, 1992 at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There were two shows in Philadelphia and I was supposed to go to both shows, but was moving back to College Park so I only went to the second show. It was raining again, so they let the few of us waiting outside Veterans stadium in Philly inside for the sound check. We were also excited because our friend Maggie, who wrote a fanzine, got us Hospitality passes, but all that got us were some soda and chips. We didn’t see U2 back stage at all. But we did get to hear Whiskey in the Jar andWhen Loves Come to Town.

Primus and Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprosy opened the all the shows I saw on the ZooTv Outside Broadcast tour, except for the rehearsal concert in Hershey. Primus had a popular song called Jerry Was a Racecar Driverand U2 had been using Disposable’s Television Drug of a Nation to open their shows. This went along well with their television themed tour, complete with big screen tvs and Bono’s channel flipping. The setlist for the Outside Broadcast Tour was pretty much the same as the first leg with a couple of additions here and there. A few things that stand out in my memory are Adam introducing Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World and the grocery cart, the belly dancer for Mysterious Ways, Larry twirling the trabant car light on the b stage for Satellite of Love, Bono’s grand entrance during Zoo Station, but mostly the Hallelujah chorus at the end of Running to Stand Still – it gave me chills every time, and still does. The ZooTV tour will always hold a special place in my heart as it was my first U2 tour.

First U2 show – my U2 A to Z

my 1st U2 showmy 1st U2 show

My musical journey on the road with U2 started 21 years ago today in Hampton, Virginia. It was Saturday March 7, 1992, and I was 19. My first U2 show was the fifth of the ZooTv Tour. On the morning of March 7th, my best friend Cindy and I drove four hours south from Ellicott City, MD to Hampton, VA. Back in those days, there was no need to get to the city of a concert a day early because there was no general admission – we had actual assigned seats on the floor. We checked into our hotel and immediately walked across the street to the Hampton Coliseum, even though it was hours before the concert was to start. We saw a small circle of people with a big microphone hovering over them. As we got closer, we realized Bono was in the middle of that circle! I didn’t speak with him, but got close enough to take pictures and to hear what he was saying to everyone else. For my first U2 show, I was seated in the fourth row in front of The Edge. Bruce Hornsby and Phil Joanou walked in from behind the stage and passed by us on their way to the soundboard. The Pixies opened, and I did not like them at all. But then again, I just wanted to hear U2. I had waited five years since the release of The Joshua Tree to see them in concert!

Bono – my U2 A to Z

Bono and me 1992

Bono and me 1992

When most people think of U2, they think of Bono. In fact some people even refer to U2 as Bono and the Boys, which really annoys me but that is a topic for another time. Bono is the lead singer of U2, the front man, the one who gets all of the publicity. He is also the one who writes the lyrics, which is my favorite part of music – along with drums. The first time I met Bono was 21 years ago in 1992 before the opening of the ZooTv Outside Broadcast tour at Giants Stadium. I handed him my Outside It’s America book for him to autograph. I noticed he was taking a while, so I looked at what he was doing and saw he was misspelling my name. I said, “No, Deena is spelled with two e’s.” Bono kind of gave me this sly smile. In my book, he wrote, “A nice t-shirt Din…Deena Bono 92” I asked Bono if they would ever play Heartland in concert. And he answered that they were thinking of putting out an album of B sides. Huh? That’s not what I asked. Then I threw my camera to my friend Mike, so he could take a picture of us. Bono threw his arms around me and put his head on my shoulder. Bono autographed the photo for me a few days later before the show in DC. Bono isn’t my favorite of U2. If you know me, you know that Larry is – more on him later on the L part of the A to Z Challenge. But Bono is a great guy, a great performer, a great lyricist, and so very entertaining both on and off the stage. Another reason why I love Bono is that he has been an integral part of the few encounters I have had with Larry. Just listen closely to his video, especially the end…

Achtung Baby – my U2 A to Z

Posted in A to Z April Challenge, Albums, U2 with tags , , , on April 1, 2013 by DeenasDays

A favorite of mine about U2 that begins with A is Achtung Baby. Sorry Adam fans. When AB was released almost 21 1/2 years ago in November 1991, I must admit that I did not like it.  It was such a departure from The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum, and actually from all of their previous albums. I had to listen to it several times before I fell in love with it, and then AB was the only thing I listened to for the next several months. It had a completely different sound from any of U2’s previous albums, but the lyrics were still amazing. And for me, music is all about lyrics – and drums. Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses is my favorite song off AB and one of my top five favorite U2 songs. It is a very emotional and angry song. In fact, I made my first love sit down and listen to the lyrics as I read them to him after he had broken up with me. If I could have written a song about us, Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses would have been it. Other favorites of mine off AB are One, So Cruel, Acrobat, and Tryin to Throw Your Arms Around the World - but really all the songs are my favorites. AB has become my second favorite U2 album (since I consider The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum one album).

Besides being a great album, Achtung Baby is significant to me because the ZooTv tour (in support of AB) was my first U2 tour and it was in those four months between the release of AB and the ZooTv tour, that I was transformed from a U2 fan into a U2 fanatic. This was the start of my ‘On the Road with U2.’ I was almost 20 and drove around the East Coast going to eight shows on the ZooTv tour: Hampton VA, Philadelphia, Hershey PA, two shows at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, two shows in Washginton DC, and back to Philadelphia again. AB was also the start of “it’s all about drums” – one of my favorite quotes that I have repeated constantly over the past 20 years. The first time I ever heard it was on the Achtung Baby documentary when Larry said, “I don’t think the lyrics are worth a shit to be honest if you ask me, I think it’s all about drums.”

Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
You’re dangerous, ‘cos you’re honest.
You’re dangerous, you don’t know what you want.
Well you left my heart empty as a vacant lot
For any spirit to haunt.
You’re an accident waiting to happen
You’re a piece of glass left there on a beach.
Well you tell me things
I know you’re not supposed to
Then you leave me just out of reach.
Who’s gonna ride your wild horses?
Who’s gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who’s gonna ride your wild horses?
Who’s gonna fall at the foot of thee?
Well you stole it ‘cos I needed the cash
And you killed it ‘cos I needed revenge.
Well you lied to me ‘cos I asked you to.
Baby, can we still be friends?
Who’s gonna ride your wild horses?
Who’s gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who’s gonna ride your wild horses?
Who’s gonna fall at the foot of thee?
Ah, the deeper I spin
Ah, the hunter will sin for your ivory skin.
Took a drive in the dirty rain
To a place where the wind calls your name
Under the trees, the river laughing at you and me.
Hallelujah! Heaven’s white rose
The doors you open I just can’t close.
Don’t turn around, don’t turn around again.
Don’t turn around your gypsy heart.
Don’t turn around, don’t turn around again.
Don’t turn around, and don’t look back.
Come on now love, don’t you look back.
Who’s gonna ride your wild horses?
Who’s gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who’s gonna taste your saltwater kisses?
Who’s gonna take the place of me?
Who’s gonna ride your wild horses?
Who’s gonna tame the heart of thee?

Posted in A to Z April Challenge, Songs with tags , , on April 30, 2012 by DeenasDays

My favorite U2 song that begins with Z is Zoo Station. It is off one of my favorite albums Achtung Baby, and is the very first song I ever heard U2 play in concert. Even today 20 years later when I listen to Zoo Station, it brings me back to the Zoo Tv tour – my very first U2 tour. Zoo Station has great lyrics. My favorite is “Time is a train, Makes the future the past. Leaves you standing in the station, Your face pressed up against the glass.”

I’m ready
Ready for the laughing gas
I’m ready
Ready for what’s next
Ready to duck
Ready to dive
Ready to say
I’m glad to be alive
I’m ready
Ready for the push
In the cool of the night
In the warmth of the breeze
I’ll be crawling around
On my hands and knees
She’s just down the line … Zoo Station
Got to make it on time … Zoo Station
I’m ready
Ready for the gridlock
I’m ready
To take it to the street
Ready for the shuffle
Ready for the deal
Ready to let go
Of the steering wheel
I’m ready
Ready for the crush
Alright, alright, alright, alright, alright
It’s alright … it’s alright … it’s alright … it’s alright
Hey baby … hey baby … hey baby … hey baby …
It’s alright
It’s alright
Time is a train
Makes the future the past
Leaves you standing in the station
Your face pressed up against the glass
I’m just down the line from your love … Zoo Station
Under the sign of your love … Zoo Station
I’m gonna be there … Zoo Station
Tracing the line … Zoo Station
I’m gonna make it on time … make it on time … Zoo Station
Just two stops down the line … Zoo Station
Just a stop down the line … Zoo Station

What is your favorite U2 song that begins with Z?

This blog post is the last of my A to Z April Challenge – my 26 favorite U2 songs. Thanks for stopping by. It’s been a great month blogging about my favorite U2 songs. V is for Van Diemen’s Land

Posted in A to Z April Challenge, Songs with tags , , , , , on April 25, 2012 by DeenasDays

My favorite U2 song that begins with V is Van Diemen’s Land. Not that Van Diemen’s Land is a favorite of mine, but I like it better than Vertigo – and they are the only two U2 songs that begin with V. But Van Diemen’s Land is off of my second favorite U2 album Rattle and Hum, which I really consider The Joshua Tree part 2 so it is kind of also my favorite album. It reminds me of the beginning of Rattle and Hum the band is walking along the docks. Van Diemen’s Land also holds a special place in my heart because I heard Edge sing it in celebration of his birthday at the rehearsal concert for the Zoo Tv tour at Hershey Park in 1992.

Hold me now, oh hold me now
Till this hour has gone around
And I gone, on the rising tide
For to face Van Diemen’s land.
It’s a bitter pill I swallow here
To be rent from one so dear.
We fought for justice and not for gain
But the magistrate sent me away.
Now kings will rule and the poor will toil
And tear their hands as they tear the soil
But a day will come in this dawning age
When an honest man sees an honest wage.
Hold me now, oh hold me now
Till this hour has gone around
And I’m gone on the rising tide
For to face Van Diemen’s Land.

Q is for Queen, Dancing (aka Dancing Queen)

Posted in A to Z April Challenge, Songs with tags , , , on April 19, 2012 by DeenasDays

My favorite U2 song that begins with Q is Queen, Dancing – or Dancing Queen. I had to be really creative here because U2 do not have any songs that begin with Q. So I picked a song they covered in concert whose second word of the title begins with Q. U2 performed Abba’s Dancing Queen live during the Zoo Tv tour on the b stage usually after Angel of Harlem. I remember watching MTV when they showed a snippet from a Zoo Tv show of U2 performing Dancing Queen and Bono put the microphone in front of Larry and Larry sang ‘oh yeah!’ That was enough to make me love Dancing Queen. So for this blog post, I wanted to show a video of that. Instead, I found something much, much better – Larry singing a verse of Dancing Queen!

Today is the 20th Anniversary of my 1st U2 show – ZooTv March 7, 1992

Posted in 'On the Road with U2', Bono, Tours, U2, ZooTv with tags , , , , , on March 7, 2012 by DeenasDays

My musical journey on the road with U2 started 20 years ago today in Hampton, Virginia. It was Saturday March 7, 1992, and I was 19. My first U2 show was the fifth of the ZooTv Tour. On the morning of March 7th, my best friend, Cindy, and I drove four hours south from Ellicott City, MD to Hampton, VA. I didn’t speak with him, but got close enough to hear what he was saying to everyone else and to take pictures. For my first U2 show, I was seated in the fourth row in front of The Edge. Bruce Hornsby and Phil Joanou walked in from behind the stage and passed by us on their way to the soundboard. The Pixies opened. For the only time on the ZooTv Tour according to U2gigs.com, “The Fly is played after Even Better Than the Real Thing and Mysterious Ways, rather than before.” The set list from my first U2 show was as follows: Zoo Station, Even Better Than the Real Thing, Mysterious Ways, The Fly, One, Until the End of the World, Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, Tryin to Throw Your Arms Around the World, Angel of Harlem, Satellite of Love, Bad/All I Want is You, Bullet the Blue Sky, Running to Stand Still, Where the Streets Have No Name, Pride, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Desire, Ultra Violet, With or Without You.

I have finished writing My Book, ‘On the Road with U2: my musical journey’

Bono and me, ZooTv tour 1992

I have finished writing my memoir, On the Road with U2: my musical journey, about my adventures the past 20 years on the U2 tours from ZooTv to 360, including all 75 concerts, the places I’ve seen and the people I’ve met. It has been a wonderful journey, both living it and reliving it while writing about it. I am working with a literary agent and currently searching for a publisher. There are many books about U2, in fact amazon.com lists over 5000. Most of the U2 books are biographies about the band, some are written by fans about their own U2 experiences, and I think I am the only one who has written a U2 book with a Larry Mullen theme. In addition to writing about the places I’ve seen, the people I’ve met, and reviewing the 75 U2 concerts I went to the past 20 years, I also write about every Larry Mullen moment in those concerts. But don’t worry, I also write about the other three guys in U2.

They took your life, they could not take your PRIDE

Posted in Songs, U2 with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 4, 2011 by DeenasDays

I know this is a blog about my travels on the U2 tours, but I could not let this day pass without writing about it. Today is April 4th, the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in Memphis. I used to work at the National Civil Rights Museum, which is at the Lorraine Motel where Dr. King was killed.

Lorraine Motel

U2 wrote a song about Dr. King called Pride (In the Name of Love), and it is one of my favorite songs. I used to love it at the U2 shows while U2 was playing Pride, Dr. King would be on the big screen and they would play part of his mountain top speech,

“Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!”

MLK & U2

Please watch this video of U2 playing Pride on ZooTv in DC on August 16, 1992 http://www.youtube.com/user/MemphisMullen?feature=mhum#p/c/AAE35BC51599E88D/17/Wy0rXzJ3EFc

I was excited when U2 played Atlanta in 2009 on their 360 Tour because I had never been to Atlanta and had been wanting to see Martin Luther King’s birthplace, Ebenezer church, and MLK’s grave.

MLK grave

I was also excited that U2 were going to play Pride at their concert, since we were in Atlanta where Martin Luther King was born and was buried. Pride had not been played since opening night in Chicago about a month earlier. I wore my MLK U2 Pride shirt, but unfortunately U2 forgot where they were and did not play Pride that night in Atlanta.

U2 did bring back Pride in 2010 on 360 in Europe, and they have been playing it in South America in 2011. I am hoping they will still be playing it next month when they start to tour the US. I mean out of 16 shows, I should be able to hear Pride at least once, right?

Pride (In the Name of Love) by U2:

One man come in the name of love
One man come and go
One man come here to justify
One man to overthrow
In the name of love!
One man in the name of love
In the name of love!
What more? In the name of love!

One man caught on a barbed wire fence
One man he resists
One man washed on an empty beach
One man betrayed with a kiss

In the name of love!
What more in the name of love?
In the name of love!
What more? In the name of love!

…nobody like you…there’s nobody like you…

Mmm…mmm…mmm…
Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride

In the name of love!
What more in the name of love?
In the name of love!
What more in the name of love?
In the name of love!
What more in the name of love…

Rest in Peace Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Thank you for all you did and all you sacrificed for the good of the world!

ZooTv recap

Primus and Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprosy opened the all the shows I saw on the ZooTv Outside Broadcast tour, except for the rehearsal concert in Hershey. Primus had a popular song called Jerry Was a Racecar Driver and U2 had been using Disposable’s Television Drug of a Nation to open their shows.

U2 released Zooropa the following summer. It was the first time I ever bought a cd, as opposed to a record or tape. Mike and I drove to Tower Records in Rockville, MD at midnight July 5, 1993 to buy Zooropa. It had a similar sound to Achtung Baby, but I didn’t like it as much. Although it had some great songs such as Dirty Day and The First Time. U2 did not tour America in support of Zooropa. I would have to wait 4 more years for a new album and another tour.

My last ZooTv show – Philly 9.3.92

Posted in 'On the Road with U2', Concerts, Tours, U2, ZooTv with tags , , , , on January 18, 2011 by DeenasDays

But we did get to hear Whiskey in the Jar and When Loves Come to Town.

Can’t Help Falling in Love with ZooTv in DC – August 15-16, 1992

Two days after Jersey on August 15th, Mike and I were back in our hometown for two more ZooTv shows. Well, sort of. As close as the ZooTv tour was going to get to Ellicott City, Maryland. We were at RFK Stadium in Washington DC in the rain. I met Bono again and he autographed the picture of the two of us from Giants Stadium. He wasn’t as talkative as in Jersey. I think the rain made him grumpy.

U2 ended both shows on August 15& 16, 1992 with Can’t Help Falling In Love in honor of the 15th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley on August 16, 1977. For the first show, I was third row and Bono knelt in front of us and sang it. As an avid Elvis fan as well, this was an amazing, unforgettable moment for me! My worlds were colliding! For the rest of the tour, U2 ended their shows with Can’t Help Falling in Love.

ZooTV Outside Broadcast Opening Night – Giants Stadium

Posted in 'On the Road with U2', Bono, Concerts, Fans, Larry Mullen, U2, ZooTv with tags , , , , , on January 10, 2011 by DeenasDays

When Bono came to me, he noticed the tee shirt I had made with ‘One’ on it.

my one t shirt

I handed Bono my Outside It’s America book for him to autograph. I noticed he was taking a while, so I looked at what he was doing and saw he was misspelling my name. I said, “No, Deena is spelled with two e’s.” Bono kind of gave me this sly smile. In my book, he wrote, “A nice t-shirt Din…Deena Bono 92”

Bono's autograph to me

ZooTv Outside Broadcast – Hershey Rehearsals

Posted in 'On the Road with U2', Concerts, ZooTv with tags , , , on January 6, 2011 by DeenasDays

We did hear them play Acrobat and So Cruel though.

We got tickets to the rehearsal show on August 7, 1992 at Hershey Park Stadium. Tickets were only $15 and went to local charities. We were way in the back, but at least we were there and it was a great show. Instead of starting off the show with Zoo Station like all the other shows, U2 began with Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Year’s Day, and Pride before going into their regular set list starting with Zoo Station. Pride was played again before the encore.

Zoo Tv 1992 – my first U2 shows

Posted in 'On the Road with U2', Concerts, U2, ZooTv with tags , , , , on January 3, 2011 by DeenasDays
